Top Ten Tuesday Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme/original feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Click the link to go to their site to see the original list for today plus links to a whole slew of other blogs. After you read mine, of course.

I'm posting this on the way out the door for a mini vacation. It's my anniversary tomorrow and the hubby and I are going away for a couple of days. I will respond to everyone who leaves a comment when I return, so don't think I'm ignoring you.

Today's topic is: Top ten most intimidating books

War and PeaceThe Poisonwood BibleSisterhood Everlasting (Sisterhood, #5)A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)
Atlas ShruggedA Monster CallsLiving Dead Girl
Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1)Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst DogJessica Darling's It List #1: The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness & Perfection

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
This book is never going to happen. It's over 1000 pages long and is about Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. I'm not even going to pretend to be interested in any of that.
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
I have literally owned this book for the past 15 years and just cannot do it. I don't know why.
A Game of Thrones by George R.R Martin
I'm interested in this series, but each book is larger than the last and there are already five of them. I would have to clear out months in my reading schedule in order to get through them. And that's just not happening. I tried to read the first one, but only after I'd watched the first season of the show. I quickly realized that the show was very faithful to the book, making the 800 page tome even harder to read as I already knew what was happening. I gave up. I do love the show though.
Sisterhood Everlasting by Anne Brashares
I'm pretty sure one of the girls dies in this book (if I'm wrong please tell me in the comments). This suspicion is only amplified by the fact that there are only 3 girls on the cover of this edition. I loved this series and just don't know if I can stomach it. I might read this one...someday.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
It's becoming clear to me that in my mind: intimidating (often) = super long.
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
I have a hard time with moms dying and cancer and sadness. I've heard great things about this book, but, yeah, I don't think it's going to happen.
Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott
I started listening to the audio about this girl who is sexually abused by her abductor. Something about listening to the first person account was way too much and I didn't get very far. This book is under 200 pages. I can pretty much guarantee that I will never finish it.
I'm scared to even put this book on my list, that's how intimidating I find it. Everybody I know loves this book so fiercely. I've tried to read it--twice. I've gotten to about the 100 page mark--twice. I will try again...someday. (Please be gentle.)
Marley and Me by John Grogan
I love dogs. I know how this book ends. There need only be one book about that. It's called Where the Red Fern Grows and it traumatizes elementary aged children every year. (Oh, and Old Yeller, don't think I've forgotten about you.)
Jessica Darling's It List by Megan McCafferty
I absolutely ADORE the Jessica Darling series. I love it. There is no way I will not be reading this book, but I'm still terrified that it will hurt my opinion on the series as a whole.

Just looking at this list makes me want to cower in the corner. What books are most intimidating to you? Link me up!

  1. Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Game of Thrones, and Atlas Shrugged are all amazing! Totally read those ones. A Monster Calls is also on my TBR list, and War and Peace made my list today. Great picks!

  2. I have the last Sisterhood book too, but I don't know if I can do it. I didn't know that one of them might be dead...

  3. Don't be intimdated by DoS&B. It was pretty darn good. I didn't enjoy the flashback part at the end, but I did very much enjoy the rest of it :-) It was unique! I have met people who didn't like it that much, my Mom being one of them. I kinda forced her into reading this, she didn't approve :-D But you'll probably end up liking it:-) Lovelie list, Natalie!

  5. I totally agree with your picks! I mean, I didn't know that one fact about Sisterhood Everlasting - but clearly, that's totally a reason to be afraid of picking that book up. Also, George RR Martin seems to scare the crap out of readers with his books :)

  6. I've read The Poisonwood Bible (twice) and Sisterhood Everlasting...I think they're both worth it. I really admire people who read the Game of Thrones books. There are so many and they're so long, I just can't imagine making that kind of commitment.

  7. Oh, Atlas Shrugged. I am definitely intimidated by that one! Like you said, it's often the long books that seem so scary! Have fun on your anniversary getaway!

  8. Okay, I won't reprimand you for not having finished TDoSaB. I loved it, but not every book is for every reader. Though, I've also listened to the audio, and the narrator is fantastic, so maybe try that route? That's the only one of your intimidating books that I've read. But I did just get A Monster Calls. I got his new book for review, so I'm going to try that one first, I think.

Oh, and happy anniversary! Hope you're having a great trip! :D

  9. Although I've not read Living Dead Girl, I want too - but can totally understand it'd be weird to listen to the book. o_O I'm scared to start reading Game of Thrones, the length just worries me. xD Happy Anniversary!
Thanks for sharing your TT and for stopping by my TTT. ^.^
    Happy Reading! :D

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
