Throughout my student teaching semester I was using my weekend post as a way to let people know what's going on in my life, so I've decided to rename my weekend post because this feature is more personal than just what books I've received. The Weekly Rewind will be about what's going on with me and my blog, as well as about the books I've added to my shelves. My Life and Blog

Life: One more week of school until Spring Break! I'm soooooo ready for a week off...at home...with my love and my bed and my books. Almost there. I'm in VA this weekend. Three of my fellow English teachers are getting married this summer, so we are having a joint wedding shower for them. I'm not invited to any of the weddings, but whatever. It will be fun. I completely understand having to cut off the guest list somewhere, and while I get along with all three, we don't hang out outside of school. I kind of hate showers, but I usually just sit inside my room on the weekends I stay here, so it will be nice to socialize for a little while. It's early in the afternoon, so I'll still have tomorrow night to burrow into my chair and watch tv. I have a ton of grading to get done over the weekend, too (although that's my own fault. I procastinated all week, and now I have to work all weekend). 

Blog and reading: Nothing on the blog because I left my laptop charger at home last weekend. My husband mailed it to me and it just showed up today--just in time to type up this post. I finished reading Mrs. Fletcher last night. I liked it, but all of the characters had the same sadness that those in Little Children did. Certainly worth reading, though. I love Tom Perrotta. I'm still reading 13 Reasons Why; Alex, Approximately; and rereading To All the Boys I've Loved Before. I'm almost done with all three, though, and hope to finish them all this weekend (although we'll see...again, I have a ton of grading that has to be my priority).

The Upside of the Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

I loved Simon vs. the Homo Sapien Agenda, so I have high hopes for this one. 

If We Were Villians by M.L. Rio

Ok, so this is going to sound crazy, but I LOVE books about pretentious college students. Throw in some Shakespeare and a murder mystery and I am in heaven. 

Given to the Sea by Mindy McGinnis

The synosis of this doesn't do a whole lot for me, but after seriously loving her amazing last book, The Female of the Species, I'm going to give this a try.

Alex & Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz

I don't have Hamilton fever, although I would love to see the play someday. Regardless, I am looking forward to this love story between Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler. 

Literally by Lucy Keating

This character finds out she is a character book sounds like a cross between Stranger Than Fiction and Ruby Sparks, two books I really enjoyed. 

Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer

I always want to read fairytale retellings, but I rarely enjoy them. This Sleeping Beauty retelling sounds pretty badass, though, so I have high hopes. 

Unearthly Things by Michelle Gagnon

This is a modern YA Jane Eyre retelling. It certainly sounds interesting. 

What I snagged from the library

 

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde

So in love with this hair. A ComicCon-like setting is a great draw, as well. 

Movie:
Allied

I've been looking forward to this historical drama. I find it interesting that everytime Brad Pitt plays a spy, one of his marriages ends, though.

My Life and Blog

Life: Home again for the weekend. My husband and I are going out with two of our couple friends to a new place for dinner, which I’m excited about. Besides my best friend (who has been my best friend for most of my life...and who lives across the country), I’ve lost track of most of the friends while working out of town for the last three years. I think most of the people who read my posts are also adults, so I’m sure you can understand how difficult it can be to make new friends. I love a couple of the women that I work with, but I go out of town almost every weekend, and we all have our own busy lives. It’s hard, sometimes, finding people to connect with, especially as a book nerd who throws on sweats the minute I get home and basically refuses to leave the house once those sweats are on. So, anyway, Yay, a night out!

Blog and reading: A WoW and a review for the book Just Another Girl this week. I’m in the middle of a trillion books right now. I started reading A Gathering of Shadows after finally finishing A Darker Shade of Magic a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been rereading All the Boys I Used to Love, so I can move on to the second book before the third one comes out this spring. I’m reading Alex, Approximately, which is a YA You’ve Got Mail, and The End of Our Story, which both come out the first week of April. There are so many good books coming out in April! I’m not the best about reading all of the arcs I snag, but I have a real goal to get to all the ones I have for April. I also picked up 13 Reasons Why a couple of days ago in preparation for the show. I’ve owned that book for ages, and am excited to finally get to it. Finally, I snagged Tom Perrotta’s upcoming book on Wednesday and immediately dived in. I truly only meant to read the first chapter, but now I’m almost half-way through. I love his writing and am really enjoying this one. So, yeah, it’s not unreasonable to be reading six books at once, is it?

New books: Again, April is an amazing month for books. I’m very excited for the ones I’m showcasing today. So without further ado, I hope you’re all having fabulous weekends!

Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta

Tom Perrotta is one of my favorite authors. Election is easily in my top three favorite books of all-time. This follows both a son and his mother and the son embarks on his first year of college and the mom has an empty nest for the first time, as she is divorced from his father. I’m loving it so far.

End of Our Story by Meg Haston

Two teens who were once together find their way back to each other after one of them suffers a great loss. I’m about a quarter of the way through this and am enjoying it so far.

Gem & Dixie by Sara Zarr

I’m not exactly sure what this is about, but I know it follows two sisters who haven’t had the best life. I’m loving this cover.

Royce Rolls by Margaret Stohl

From what I’m gathering about this book, this basically follows a Kardashian like family and the girl who is trying to save her family’s reality show from cancellation. I’m not going to lie, I HATE everything about the Kardashian family, so I’m a bit wary about this, but the premise does sound fairly enjoyable.

Pretty Fierce by Kieran Scott

This follows a girl who’s parents are professional assassins. That’s all I needed to read in order to be interested.

Get It Together, Delilah! by Erin Gough

I read a review that compared this to Simon vs. the Homo Sapien Agenda, which definitely peaked my interest.

What I snagged from the library

Valiant by Lesley Livingston

This book about a femal gladitor seems to be getting some good buzz. Definitely curious.

Movie:

The Edge of Seventeen

I'm so excited to see this one. I wanted to see it in the theater, but just never got around to it.

MY THOUGHTS:

I really wanted to like this more. While I never adore Eulberg's work, I do consistently enjoy her books. Her writing is fast-paced and her storylines are usually pretty cute. This is about two girls who both like the same boy (a storyline that never gets old). One is his best friend, and the other is his girlfriend. The idea behind this book is that you never really know what somebody else’s life is like. A girl can seem to have it all, but her world might really be falling apart around her.

While I appreciate the thought that you never really know what somebody else's life is like, I really struggled with the narration of this one--it was truly the epitome of tell vs show. Hope is and has been obsessed with her best friend Brady for years. She is a junior and he is a senior. She was convinced that they would finally get together once she started high school, but instead Parker moved to town and, before she knew it, Parker and Brady are a couple and Hope is still just the best friend. Of course she despises Parker for “moving in on her man.” I couldn't get over Hope's constant whining about the boy who has "friendzoned" her (and, yes, she uses that term), and how she needs to lose some weight.  A teenage girl who is obsessed with her weight is one of my biggest turn-offs...or any person, really. Man, woman, boy, girl. I understand body issues; I do, but how tiring to listen to. In person or in books. I love books with dual/multi narration. When it is done well, it is one of my favorite styles, but Hope’s perspective starts this and lasts for the first quarter of the book. I was relieved when the narration switched to Parker. I was honestly about to DNF this book until the narration switched.

*Small spoilers in this paragraph, but this all happens in the first half of the book.* I liked Parker more, but found the drunk mean sister in the trailer park both annoying and unbelievable. I've said this before, and I will say it Every.Time. this stupid trope pops up: Living in a trailer park DOES NOT make you drunk trash who mistreats the people you are supposed to love and take care of. Parker feels guilty she has to depend so much on her best friend and on Brady, but she really doesn’t have a choice. She is counting down the days until she graduates (as a junior, as well, she has a while).

There are things that I liked about this. I love that Hope and Brady are into Rube Goldberg machines (those contraptions where a marble goes into a funnel, which pushes the fan button, which release the needle that pops the balloon...for example). I also really liked Hope’s friend Madelyn, Hope’s mom, and Parker’s best friend (whose name escapes me right now).

Overall, I was just disappointed. Again, I usually enjoy this author's work, and am bummed (especially after skimming the afterward where she said she's been working on this for five years!--I hate disliking a work that is obviously an author's baby). This might work for others more than it worked for me, and I'll definitely continue to be excited for new works from this author.

Why I'm Excited: I always wanted to go to summer camp. Blame my crazy reading habits, even as a kid, but I idealized this East Coast type of life full of private schools and summer camps. I love books that follow a group of girls/women, so this is right up my alley. I love this cover, too. I'm always drawn to a starry-skied cover. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for this one.

I don't know how to condense this synopsis down to a sentence, but this sounds amazing. It's an adult novel about seven students at a consevatory that study Shakespeare. It says it's part coming of age story and part confessional. I'm seriously excited for this one.

I'm rereading the first book right now, ando have the second book on deck, and this one already on hold. Curious where this series ends up.

My Life and Blog

Life: This is going to be brief this week. I'm fighting off a cold and feel like crap. So happy it's Friday, so I can spend the next couple of days hiding under the covers. 

Blog and reading: A WoW this week. I finally finished reading A Darker Shade of Magic last night. I've owned this book since it first came out last week, and read almost half of it last year. I've really gotten to a point where I'm not starting series until all of the books are out. My book memory is shit, and I hate having to reread all of the books of a series as new ones come out. I enjoyed it, but was surprised by how much the climax fell flat for me. That said, I am excited to continue the series now that the books are out. I'm also currently reading Alex, Approximately, which I'm enjoying.

I finished A Darker Shade of Magic last night, and plan to start a Gathering of Shadows this weekend. I'm excited to binge the whole series.

A girl purposely gets captured by rival pirates to search their ship.

This is one of those movies I wouldn't have any interest in, but I can't ignore the combination of Eastwood and Hanks.
