Weekly Rewind 6.7.14

Weekly Rewind
The new books on my shelves, the links I loved, and my week in a nutshell.

Since I started this blog I've participated in Stacking the Shelves, which is a weekly feature hosted by Tyngas Reviews, and I'm going to continue linking to that meme. Throughout my student teaching semester I was using my weekend post as a way to let people know what's going on in my life, so I've decided to rename my weekend post because this feature is more personal than just what books I've received. The Weekly Rewind will be about what's going on with me and my blog, as well as about the books I've added to my shelves, and the links I've enjoyed over the past week from other blogs and the interwebs in general.

My Life and Blog

Life: Man, job hunting sure is taking up, like, ALL of my time. I've really widened my search, and it feels like it is all I have been doing. So stressful! I'm not sleeping and am breaking out. Gah. I really just want to find the school that will be a perfect fit. For me and for the students. I just. I just don't even want to think about it right now. Almost all application due dates seem to be next week (if they haven't already passed), but really no later than the end of the month, so I'm assuming that I'll be around more in July, but who knows. I'm trying to keep up on what all my blogger buddies are doing, but it's been hard. Thanks again for your kind thoughts and for sticking with me. Love you guys! As I am once again throwing this together on Friday night--and am beat--that's all I'm going to say today.
Blog: Not too shabby this week. 3 or 4 posts a week is what I've been aiming for, and I actually accomplished that this week.
  • Monday (night): A release day review of The Truth About Alice. I really enjoyed this book about slut shaming and rumors told from the perspective of 4 teens. I would definitely recommend this one.
  • Wednesday: I'm waiting for Bitter Greens which is a retelling of Rapunzel that came out in Australia a couple of years ago, and is finally getting a September release here in the US.
  • Thursday: A movie review for That Awkward Moment. Zac Efron is adorable, but that isn't enough to save this predictable dud.
New Books: I got some books. I hope you are all having fabulous weekends!

The Fever by Megan Abbott
I'm a little over 50% through this book and I don't have a clue what is going on. It's certainly intriguing, and I can't wait to get some answers. I've seen some people classify this as YA, but I disagree. This is about teenage girls, but it is adult. I think readers who like YA will enjoy this one, though.
#scandal by Sarah Ockler
A girl agrees to go with her best friend's boyfriend to prom when her friend is too sick to go. The two end up kissing, and before she knows it, a picture of the act is all over social networking sites.
Summer of Yesterday by Gaby Triana
Since this was billed as a cross between Fast Times and Back to the Future, my expectations may have been a little too high. I'm only about 10% through this, but it is nowhere near as good as those two movies so far...I'm going to give it another chapter or so, but it better start living up to that awesomeness soon or it is going straight to DNF-ville.
The Body in the Woods by April Henry
The first book in a series about teens who work for Portland's Search and Rescue. I've only read one book by April Henry which I didn't find that impressive, but I love that cover (I'm so shallow), so decided to give this one a try.
Fan Art Sarah Tregay
A gay teen falls for his best friend. Isn't that cover adorable?
17 First Kisses by Rachel Allen
This sounds like a pretty typical contemp where two friends like the same dude. I haven't really seen anything about it good or bad.
All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner
A woman faces her pain pill addiction through rehab.

What I snagged from the library

The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas
So, yeah. I own the first book, won the second, and may or may not *ahem*snagged the third book, but I've heard I should start here, so I picked this up from the library.
The One and Only by Emily Giffin
A woman who has lived and breathed football in her small Texas town starts to wonder if there is more to life.
Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler
It's a Sarah Ockler weekend apparently. I'll probably tackle #scandal first, but I've heard this one is pretty cute.

Link Love
From the interwebs:

I didn't do a whole lot of surfing this week, so I'm only going to share this Buzzfeed post about how Everybody Who Watched The Fault in Our Stars Hates John Green Now which cracked me up. That's why you read the book first, people. Lol. I'm excited to see the movie, but I'm waiting until it comes out on DVD. Bawling my eyes out in public is not my idea of a good time.

Upcoming Reviews

Well that's it for me this week. Feel free to leave a link to whatever weekend post you do (Stacking the Shelves, In My Mailbox, etc). I love to see what books people have recently snagged and especially enjoy hearing about my fellow bloggers' weeks. I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend!

  1. The job search must be really getting you down. I just hope that the right job comes along soon for you. You'll be busy with your review books I guess...enjoy!

  2. Loving the look of the haul this week. Glad that you enjoyed The Truth About Alice, I intend to get to that book as soon as I can. Good luck with the job search. I'm going to be in the same position this time next year and I'm dreading it!

  3. I LOVE all things Sarah J Maas, so so so much. Although I actually recommend starting with Throne of Glass (if you haven't already?) because I think it's better than The Assassin's Blade. x) Which is weird to say, seeing I gave them ALL 5-stars (and I don't give out that many 5-stars!) Eeep, but so many awesomes on your stack. I'd love to read Fanart. :)

  5. Good luck with the job hunt. It's so difficult to find the right opportunity.

Great haul! I just finished #scandal this week and I really, really enjoyed it. I think I have ARCs of all of these but Jennifer Weiner's book. I need to get to all of them soon. :)

    Happy reading (and job-hunting)!

  7. I grabbed #scandal because I thought Bittersweet was really cute, but I've been seeing some not-so-stellar reviews for it, so I've moved it down the pile. I did, however, see a really awesome review for 17 First Kisses, which I had initially dismissed, even though I have a review copy, so I may end up picking that one up soon. Apparently, it's not as typical as the summary makes it sound. And I need to read those novellas in the SJM series. I've read books 1 and 2 and have the third in my possession, but I'm still really curious about the BEFORE.

Good luck on the continued job search. Hopefully all of your hard work will pay off soon! Hope you're enjoying summer so far! :D

  9. I am so with you on the job hunt thing. I am SO sick of applying to jobs, but whatever, it's a part of life. I hope you end up with a school that's a great fit for you!

I love all the Sarah Ockler on here. I've only read two of her books, but they are some of my favorites. Bittersweet is super cute and will probably have you craving cupcakes by the end of it! haha. I hope you have a great week!

  10. Great haul!! Scandal is one that I really want to read as well. I will have to look for your review. I tried to pick up a copy of The Fever at BEA, but I didn't get to Megan's table in time because of another signing. It was tough trying to prioritize all of the books that were available.

Good luck with the job search and I hope you enjoy all of your new books.

  15. I am going to drop you some major love here, because job searching SUCKS. I'm rooting for you.

  16. I'm disappointed to hear about Summer of Yesterday…I hope it gets better! With those comparisons, it was bound to disappoint, though. 17 First Kisses is also on my TBR list for the summer, it sounds like a cute read.

Saw Fault in Our Stars on Saturday and it was sad (of course). That link was pretty hilarious, but I agree with the comments that all of those reactions were probably complimentary and I don't think they didn't necessarily not read the book. A lot of people get more emotional seeing a movie than reading a book, I think. But it may be that there are some people who didn't read the book and were surprised, but really, it's a movie about teenagers with cancer, what did they think was going to happen??

Hope you hear something soon on the job front! ~Pam

  18. Good luck on the job hunt!
I need The Assassin's Blade, I love the cover so much, haha. I hope you enjoy the series! I heard 17 Kisses was pretty good and not quite what you'd normally expect (either that or I'm mixing up with another book...there are quite a few YA contemporaries this year!), so hopefully it's good! Enjoy your new books!

  19. Good luck with the job hunt! It's never fun, but I'm sure you'll find something soon! And I am waiting for The Fault in Our Stars to come out on DVD too because I'm worried I won't like the movie as much as I liked the book. I'm hoping that's not the case! :D

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
