Top Ten Tuesday (26) That's one ugly cover

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme/original feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Click the link to go to their site to see the original list for today plus links to a whole slew of other blogs. After you read mine, of course.

Today's Topic is: Top ten nine books covers I would love to redesign

So there are some seriously disturbing and ugly covers in the world. I could show you a whole bunch, but I'm not going to. I chose these books because I have either a) read them or b) will be reading them. I couldn't care less about ugly covers for books I have no actual interest in.

Unhinged by A.G. Howard
Is that supposed to be Morpheus? WTF. Morpheus is supposed to be dark and mysterious. Not some emo dude. A six year-old girl could kick this guy's ass. Seriously.
This is a cute, fluffy read about two girls who end up living alone during their senior year. I don't understand why it is a kiss-y face cover.
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
I just. What is this? Where is her nose? Why would you give a fun book such a scary-ass cover?
I don't understand this redesign at all. The first book of this series is awesome with a girl blowing all these sparkling stars out of her cupped hands. This is so boring and lame!
Not That Kind of Girl by Siobhan Vivian
I really enjoyed this author's The List and I love the Burn for Burn books, but this cover is so hideous that I just cannot pick this one up. Enough with the kiss-y covers.
What is this?! Seriously: Stop redesigning series when the original cover design is vastly superior.
Lonesome Young by Lucy Connors
I'm intrigued by the description of Romeo and Juliet meets Justified, but that is one ugly cover.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Listen, I understand this cover. I do. It doesn't make it any less hideous.
Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin
I love this book and its companion, Something Blue. This boring, pink cover does absolutely nothing for the story within.

I'm sure I could find one more, but it will just be another boring kiss-y face one. So those are the sequels and series starters I cannot wait to get my hands on. What books made your list? Link me up!

  1. The Lonesome Young sounds very promising, but you're right, that cover is just not working at all. It looks like a cheesy romance. A really cheesy romance.

I was expecting more from Lair of Dreams - loved the cover for The Diviners.

  2. So upset about Lair of Dreams cover! And the creepiest cover up there would have to be Bridget Jone's.. um wow!

  3. Hahahahh! Your Unhinged commentary. I agree. Actually, he looks quite laughable to me. And Bridget Jones. Most definitely. Geepers.

    Great post!

  4. I agree with you about Bridget Jones. Woah that's weird!

  5. hahah! Your Unhinged description made me crack up though I adore the cover. I think it's very pretty...though you are so right. There really are a ton of ugly covers out there. And the redesign of The Diviners makes me SO SAD. I loved the original cover so much.

  6. I haven't read the series, so I don't know what the characters should be like, but I thought the cover for Unhinged was pretty. Maybe I will change my mind after reading the books. I definitely agree with your other selections. I actually considered a few of them for my list.

  7. That cover for 'Unhinged' is so weird, I agree it's out of book's context. As are all the rest. I'm especially freaked out by Bridget Jones cover. I felt like it's going to bite my finger when I was holding/reading it.

  8. Not a fan of these covers, either. Lair of Dreams is quite a disappointing cover after The Diviners!

  9. I'm so disappointed with Liar of Dreams! So ugly. I loved the original cover of The Diviners. Also, The Lonesome Young's cover makes me think of an old time western daytime soap haha.

  10. I haven't read Splintered yet, but that cover for Unhinged is pretty creepy. I don't like when there are pictures of the characters because I like to imagine what they look like. Great list and love the commentary! ~Pam

  11. I actually like some of these, haha. But the LAIR OF DREAMS cover is a big upset. THE DIVINERS had such a pretty cover, and I don't know what possessed them to change that, especially into something like this.

  12. I totally agree. I hate kiss-y covers!

  13. I haven't read Ten Things We Did, but I always thought they looked too much like siblings to me. When I read your comment just now I was like "oh are they lesbians?" But I guess the cover is of a guy and a girl rather than the two girls who live together?

When I was growing up my dad had a framed postcard of the Great Gatsby cover hanging in our house. I always thought it was so weird and creepy, but after I read the book in high school it grew on me. I guess I think of it as being more reflective of its time period rather than a really great cover.

  14. I couldn't agree more about these! The Book of Love cover is such a disappointment after the original cover of the first book---so pretty! And Unhinged...yeck. I seriously wanted a poster of the Splintered cover, but this...no. I don't want that much Morpheus, on the cover OR in the book lol. Plus, yea, that's not how I pictured him at all, either.

  15. I kind of agree with you on Something Borrowed, but I would definitely choose it over the movie tie-in with all the actors all over the cover. And OMG Bridget Jones's Diary. WHAT IS THAT

  16. I saw Bridget Jones's Diary on another TTT list. I actually think that it is fun and cute because the face has a surprised expression. Now, if the face was all creepy looking, that would be a different story. Check out my TTT list: http://www.booksavvyblog.blogspot.com/

Also, I just followed you with GCF. If you are interested, follow me back at Book Savvy!

  17. Love this list! I agree totally with Unhinged, I've just got my hands on Splintered and the cover is gorgeous. When I got a copy of Unhinged I was excited, but really disappointed that the cover isn't nearly as pretty as the first. Gatsby made my list too, it creeps me out! Great list. My TTT.

  18. Some kissy faced covers are just so uncomfortable, like the ones you listed here!

  19. I got REALLY annnoyed by The Ten Things cover after I had read it and saw people online ranting about it!! I didn't mind at first, because let's be honest. With YA you just get a lot of couples and cheesy, pink-ish covers and I'm not the kind of person who won't take a book with me to public places if it has an embarassing cover (Are You there God, It's me Margeret? Has a couple of bras on the cover. Of COURSE I carried it all around school with me!) But I know a lot of people hate covers like that and it prevents them from reading these awesome books and I don't understand why publishers don't just give them nicer covers!!! It's not that hard :) (I guess. I wouldn't know. I can't even draw a circle without messing it up, so I might better shut up...)

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
