The Forgotten Book

Author: Mecthild Glaser

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date: January 2, 2018

Goodreads:

A Jane Austen-inspired YA tale about a sixteen-year-old girl who finds a magical book—and discovers that anything she writes inside it comes true.

Emma is used to things going her way. Her father is headmaster of her prestigious boarding school, her friends take her advice as gospel, and she's convinced that a relationship with her long-time crush is on the horizon.

As it turns out, Emma hasn't seen anything yet. When she finds an old book in an abandoned library, things really start going Emma's way: anything she writes in the book comes true.

But the power of the book is not without consequences, and Emma soon realizes that she isn't the only one who knows about it. Someone is determined to take it from her—and they'll stop at nothing to succeed.

A new boy in school—the arrogant, aloof, and irritatingly handsome Darcy de Winter—becomes Emma's unlikely ally as secrets are revealed and danger creeps ever closer.

Why I'm Excited: That cover is preeeettttyyy. I love the idea of a book where everything written in it comes true. Also, boarding school is my go-to setting. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for this one.

Weekly Rewind
The new books on my shelves and my week in a nutshell.

Throughout my student teaching semester I was using my weekend post as a way to let people know what's going on in my life, so I've decided to rename my weekend post because this feature is more personal than just what books I've received. The Weekly Rewind will be about what's going on with me and my blog, as well as about the books I've added to my shelves. This post is linked to Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga's Reviews and the Sunday Post over at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

My Life and Blog

Life: Home for the long weekend, and only 2 more weeks of school! I usually type this post up on Thursday night when I'm making the 4 hour trek, but didn't yesterday. So I'm pretty beat. Life is trucking along. I've been busy sending out resumes to hopefully snag a job in PA for next fall, and have been putting together my lesson plans for these last two weeks. I'm doing a brand new unit, which has been a ton of work, but it is mostly front-loaded. Once I get it all figured out, I'll be able to let my students go--which will give me time for all those last minute things I'll need to do.

Blog and reading:WoW this week. Check out that cover! I'm slumping big time these last couple of weeks--which is just a combination of stress, getting over a nasty cold, and being so close to summer. I've started a billion books, but nothing is sticking. It is what it is. I'm sure I'll make my way out of it once school is out.

New books: I do have some pretty titles to share with you this week. So without further ado, I hope you're all having fabulous weekend!

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crawley
Many trusted blog friends are raving about this romance, so I'm excited to dive in.
Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts
So I thought the "bastard" was a dude (because of the word bastard, I guess, and the male author), so I'm kind of disappointed that it's not...
The Possible by Tara Altebrando
I had to snag this after seeing the cover. I'm intrigued by the mother with kenetic powers.
Follow Me Back by AV Geiger
An obsessive fan and a famous singer fall in love on twitter...but I think this is supposed to be more thriller than romance (certainly based on that cover and title).
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
This adult novel follows a journalist who is hand-selected by an iconic actress to talk about her scandalous life. It sounds pretty fun.
Perennials by Mandy Berman
I downloaded this so long ago, that I completely forgot about it. After rereading this synopsis of two friends who meet back up at summer camp as counselors the year after graduating college. I'm definitely excited to give this a try. Billed as for fans of Jennifer Close and Curtis Sittenfeld--two of my favorite authors.
Liberty: the Spy Who (Kind of) Liked Me by Andrea Portes
A "super-fun, fast-paced spy novel"? Sold.
The Unlikelies by Carrie Firestone
I feel like comparing a novel to The Breakfast Club AND The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks (one of my all-time favorites) is kind of setting me up for major disappointment...but, we'll see.

Well that's it for me this week. Feel free to leave a link to whatever weekend post you do (Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post, etc). I love to see what books people have recently snagged and especially enjoy hearing about my fellow bloggers' weeks. I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend!

Reign of the Fallen

Author: Sarah Glenn Marsh

Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: January 23, 2018

Goodreads:

An LGBT fantasy series that follows a talented necromancer who must face down a deadly nemesis who has learned how to turn her magic into a weapon.

Odessa is one of Karthia's master necromancers, catering to the kingdom's ruling Dead. Whenever a noble dies, it's Odessa's job to raise them by retrieving their souls from a dreamy and dangerous shadow world called the Deadlands. But there is a cost to being raised--the Dead must remain shrouded, or risk transforming into zombie-like monsters known as Shades. If even a hint of flesh is exposed, the grotesque transformation will begin.

A dramatic uptick in Shade attacks raises suspicions and fears among Odessa's necromancer community. Soon a crushing loss of one of their own reveals a disturbing conspiracy: someone is intentionally creating Shades by tearing shrouds from the Dead--and training them to attack. Odessa is faced with a terrifying question: What if her necromancer's magic is the weapon that brings Karthia to its knees?

A lavish fantasy with a surprising and breathtaking LGBT romance at its core, Reign of the Fallen is a gutsy, unpredictable read that will grab readers by the throat and never let go....

Why I'm Excited: I don't read a lot of fantasy, but I've always been fascinated by necromancy. Let's be honest, though, that cover is amazing. I'd probably pick this up if it was about a girl watching paint dry. So pretty! I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for this one.

My Life and Blog

Life: I'm feeling sick as shiiiiiiit. I just do not have the energy to write about life right now...I'll catch up next week. Only 3 more weeks of school!

Blog and reading: Nothing this week on the blog front. I've started a trillion books over the last couple of weeks, but nothing is really sticking. I hate slumping, but it happens. I really just don't read when I'm sick. I watch bad tv.

New books: I am excited for this small haul. So without further ado, I hope you are all having fabulous weekends!

One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus
The Breakfast Club + murder mystery is a compelling synopsis. I need to get on this one.
Romancing the Throne by Nadine Jolie Courtney
Two sisters at a prep school fall for a royal. I'm a bit hesitant about the sibling love triangle...but swoon at princes.
Dawn Breaks Dawn by Sara Larson
Princess. Power. Kingdom. Yada, yada.
House of Furies by Madeline Roux
A maid at a boarding house realizes everything is not as it seems. I like books with photos.

The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord
I've only read one book by this author so far, but I am looking forward to this one and like the camp setting.
It's Always the Husband by Michele Campbell
I love a good twisty mystery, especially when it's about bad female friendships.

Well that's it for me this week. Feel free to leave a link to whatever weekend post you do (Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post, etc). My Life and Blog

Life: Last week I lost one of my beloved cats, Juniper. Two weekends ago, she was really sick when I went home, so my husband and I took her to the emergency vet. They had her for a few days, but her condition was not getting better, and then she took a nosedive. There were so many things that was horrible about the situation. I wasn't there to say good-bye, so my poor husband had to both make the decision AND say good-bye to her alone. We were already a few thousand dollars deep into her treatment, and it still didn't save her. Plus, it was just so fast and unexpected. When we lost our fat kitty earlier this school year, it was the worst, but I had been expecting it because he was sick for a long time. This completely blind-sided me. Heartbroken.

On a more positive note, I do have something to celebrate this weekend. My husband is coming down to VA to spend the weekend with me. Our first date was going to see the movie The Fifth Element, and the studio is doing a limited 20 year anniversary release on Sunday. So we've decided that of course we have to go see it. I can't wait.

Anyway, so glad it is the weekend! There are only 20 more days of school, and boy are my kids acting like it. Also, I watched the movie Sing three times this week because it was the movie all three of my classes voted for their reward day (they took their state reading test on Monday, so Tuesday was reward day). It was actually pretty good...but three times! Those songs are still stuck in my head.

Blog and reading: Nothing on the blog this week. I realized after I had already turned out the lights and had snuggled under the covers on Tuesday night that I hadn't posted a WoW. Oh, well. I'm currently reading Little Monsters, which I'm digging, Ramona Blue (still), Here Lies Daniel Tate, and Into the Water--which is unfortunately not as compelling as Girl on the Train (at least so far at ~ 60 pages).

New Books: Just a few books this week, but I'm excited for all of them. So without further ado, I hope you're all having fabulous weekends!

Little Monsters by Kara Thomas
I'm really enjoying this one so far. It follows a girl (with a so far just hinted dark past), whose friend goes missing after a party after her friend ditched and went to the party without her.
Here Lies Daniel Tate by Cristin Terrill
A con-man worms his way into a family by pretending to be their long-lost son, only to find out that he chose the wrong family. I've been very much looking forward to this one. I've started reading it, but Little Monsters has been holding my attention more.
The Heirs by Susan Reiger
After their father dies, five adult brothers' lives are thrown into turmoil when a woman claims partial ownership of their inheritance by claiming she had two kids with their father. I enjoy a good upperclass family drama, so I have high hopes for this one.

What I snagged from the library

Ok, so I still have to read the second book...but I'm still excited for this.
Duels and Deception by Cindy Anstey
I still need to read Love, Lies, and Spies (despite owning it), but I dig these Austenish-style books this author is writing.
Movie
Miss Sloane
I'm looking forward to this woman takes on the government story. I really like Jessica Chastain.

Life and Blog

Life: This week was very rough, and I'm finding myself unable to talk about it right now. So this is just going to be about books and I'll catch up with you all next week.

Blog and reading:TTT and a WoW this week. I'm currently reading Ramona Blue (after setting it aside for awhile). I'm actually loving it now that I picked it back up. I snagged Into the Water this week, though, so imagine my attention is going to shift to that.

New books: I have some titles this week that I am quite excited about. So without further ado, I hope you're all having fabulous weekends!

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich
I've been excited to start this trope-busting book. I adore this cover.
The Best Kind of Magic by Crystal Cestari
A girl who can see "true love" falls for a boy who isn't her soul mate...or something.
Grit Gillian French
This realistic fictional story follows the girl dubbed the "town slut" after her best friend disappears.
New Boy by Tracy Chevalier
Have you read any of the Hogath Shakespeare books? I haven't yet (and cannot flipping wait for Gillian Flynn's take on Hamlet). This is a modern retelling of Othello.
#antisocial by Jillian Blake
The phones of students at a prep school get hacked and secrets get revealed--which sounds like a very familiar storyline.
Grace and the Fever by Zan Romanoff
A girl falls for the lead of a famous band...which also sounds like a very familiar storyline.
