Nantucket Red

Author: Leila Howland
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Release Date: May 13, 2014

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Cricket Thompson's lifetime of overachieving has paid off: she's headed to Brown University in the fall, with a spot on the lacrosse team and a scholarship that covers almost everything. Who knew living in the dorm cost money? An Ivy League education seems to mean living at home for the next four years.

When Cricket is offered the chance to earn enough cash to afford a real college experience, she heads back to Nantucket for the summer. But the faraway island challenges Cricket in ways she hadn't anticipated. It's hard to focus on earning money for next year, when she finds her world opening up in entirely new ways-to art, to travel, and, most unexpectedly, to a future completely different from the one she has been working toward her whole life. A friendship blossoms with Ben, the gorgeous surfer and bartender who encourages Cricket to be free, even as she smarts at the pain of seeing Zack, her first love, falling for her worst enemy.

But one night, when Cricket finally lets herself break all her own rules, she realizes she may have ruined her carefully constructed future with one impulsive decision. Cricket must dig deep to fight for her future, discovering that success isn't just about reaching goals, but also about listening to what she's been trying to ignore-her own heart.

Why I'm Excited:

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Nantucket Blue. The cover looked like a typical beach romance, but it turned out to be a much deeper look at female friendship and being on your own for the first time. As much as I liked Zack, I like that the author is taking the risk of breaking her couple up. High school romances very rarely carry over to college and I enjoyed how realistic this author's writing is. I can't wait to go back to Nantucket to find out what Cricket is up to.

  1. This is the first time I've read the synopsis for Nantucket Red even though I've known about it for a while, and all I can say is AHHH. I'm incredibly excited. I loved Nantucket Blue so much, and honestly this one sounds even better (probably because I relate a lot more). I hope that cover is similar to the final one because it's gorgeous!

  2. I liked Nantucket Blue also, but it makes me sad that she and Zack are breaking up. Nice pick.

  6. I read around 100 pages of NANTUCKET BLUE before I scanned to the end and put it down to maybe finish and properly read a different time. The MC just drove me crazy and I wasn't liking it. That said, the books covers make the books look so good.

  7. Oh wow. I didn't realize Nantucket Blue was going to be a series. And double wow on breaking up Cricket and Zack, even though it does sort of make sense. I'm interested in reading this and seeing how things turn out.

  10. As sad as I am that Zack and Cricket break up I do agree with your point about HS relationships rarely standing the test of time. I'm really excited for this one, I hope that Cricket's relationship with her dad is dealt with, I hated how that fell by the wayside in Nantucket Blue!

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
