Weekly Rewind and Happy 4th of July!

Weekly Rewind
The new books on my shelves, the links I loved, and my week in a nutshell.

Since I started this blog I've participated in Stacking the Shelves, which is a weekly feature hosted by Tyngas Reviews, and I'm going to continue linking to that meme. Throughout my student teaching semester I was using my weekend post as a way to let people know what's going on in my life, so I've decided to rename my weekend post because this feature is more personal than just what books I've received. The Weekly Rewind will be about what's going on with me and my blog, as well as about the books I've added to my shelves, and the links I've enjoyed over the past week from other blogs and the interwebs in general.

My Life and Blog

Life: I'm posting this a few days early because July 3rd is my 9th wedding anniversary.  My husband and I are taking a much needed vacation for the long weekend. We're just going up to one of our favorite lakes for a few days to do some fishing and general relaxing. I didn't want to skip another week of my weekend post--time just got away from me last weekend--so I figured a few days early was better than not at all.

So I do have some news. I have received a job offer from a school in FL. I'm so torn. On the one hand having a job offer is awesome and it's a good school and the principal seems great, but on the other, my husband's company is doing pretty well and he just cannot move right now, so we would have to live apart for at least a year which I'm not sure I could handle. While we've been married for 9 years, we've been together for 17. I'm not one of those women who is blasé about my husband and marriage. I adore him. He is amazing. I cannot imagine being apart from him for any real amount of time. I'm praying that I get something in PA. I'm beyond stressed trying to make this life changing decision, and am so glad to get a few days away to just be.

Blog: I haven't been doing a whole lot of reading this past week or so. I've just been so stressed--and so busy! I did manage to finally post a review for On the Fence this week. I'm taking a couple books with me on vacation, but have mostly chosen a few books to re-read. Whenever I start to slump, I find that re-reading is the best way to snap me out of it. I know I've been the worst blogger buddy these past few weeks. I plan on doing some MAJOR blog hopping next week to get caught up on what all my friends have been up to!

  • Monday: An early review for On the Fence. This was the perfect easy summer read. I really enjoyed it.
  • Wednesday: I'm waiting on The Sin Eater's Daughter. Have you heard of this one? It sounds amazing.

New Books: I have a few new books to share with you. So without further adieu. I hope you all have fabulous, safe, and fun-filled long weekends!

Review Books

Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen
I'm excited for this Peter Pan, not re-telling exactly, continuation from the POV of Captain Hook. This is also an adult novel which is awesome.
Illusive by Emily Lloyd-James
While I'm weary of such and such-meets-such and such descriptions, I still fall for them every time. This is billed as X-Men meets Ocean's Eleven which is shiver-inducing.
A girl who is often "missing time" begins to piece together her secret life. Sounds pretty cool.
Through to You by Lauren Barnholdt
This sounds like a pretty run-of-the-mill opposites attract romance.

What I Bought

A YA novel from the author who wrote Queen Bees and Wannabees (which is the book Mean Girls is based on). I actually read, and really liked, Queen Bees when it first came out, so I'm excited to read this.
Wither by Lauren DeStefano
I found this for 50 cents. 50 cents!
After her boyfriend proposes, a girl starts to think about her first love.

What I snagged from the library

Inland by Kat Rosenfield
I'm going to be honest, I don't have a clue what this is about. I've seen the cover around and sometimes (weekly/daily) I order books from the library based solely on their covers.
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
I had an e-arc of this book, but never got around to it. It recently got released in PB, so I decided to give it a try. The time-traveling mystery aspect is intriguing.

Link Love and Upcoming Reviews
Will be back next week!

Well that's it for me this week. Feel free to leave a link to whatever weekend post you do (Stacking the Shelves, In My Mailbox, etc). I love to see what books people have recently snagged and especially enjoy hearing about my fellow bloggers' weeks. I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend!

Again, Happy 4th of July! I hope you all have safe, fun-filled weekends!

  1. Happy 4th and Happy Anniversary! That's a tough call about moving to Florida. I hope something in PA comes up. I love Florida, but I wouldn't want to be away from my husband either, so I get where you are coming from. I really liked Wither….I can't believe it was on sale for 50 cents! I am also looking forward to your thoughts on Inland! Enjoy your vacation!

  2. Congrats on your job find! I hate to hear about the struggles you face, but it sounds like a great opportunity. A second year teacher has so many other options, I can see it opening doors for you when you complete your year. I'd say go for it, but it is easy, sitting here on behind my keyboard, to say what to do.

  4. Oh Natalie, that is a terrible dilemma for you. I do hope you find work in PA. I really hope you enjoy Wither. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I adore that series. I also have seen Inland around a lot and I'm intrigued... I hope you enjoy the books you read and have a lovely relaxing break.

  5. Happy Anniversary and I hope you and your husband have a great vacation! And I wish you the best in making a decision about the job and hope something new closer to home pops up before you have to make a final decision! I can't imagine being separated from my husband for so long either.

  6. I love fairytales so I need to read Alias Hook. Wither has been sitting on my shelves for more that two years and I am hesitant to read it because it gets so many mixed reviews. I am curious to see what you think about it. Hope you have/had a nice break and good luck on the decision making :). Happy reading!

  7. Seriously tough decision you've got here. I think you need to look at a few things 1) do you like the idea of living in Florida 2) will your husband be able to get a job he likes in Florida for you to be together 3) how long might you wait for a job offer closer to home 4) is this job right for you. Tricky! It's great that you got a job offer and I hope you make the right decision for both of you.

  8. Oh no! I want to be happy for the job offer, but I just looked up Pennsylvania and it's so far from Florida :( I hope you get something more local, I totally understand your hesitation to live apart, I don't think I could do it either.

Enjoy your time off and your anniversary - congratulations!

  9. Wow, I don't think I could be that far away from my hubby that long either. He used to work construction when we first started living together, and I swear, he was out of town so much it felt like I was living alone. I couldn't do that again. :( I hope something else works out for you! Oh, and Happy Anniversary! :D

Great haul, too...I just got Alias Hook on audio...I had a galley but didn't get to it. I'm hoping to start the audio very soon and I'm hoping the narrator sounds like Hook from Once Upon a Time. :) Hope you had an awesome week and that you have an even more awesome weekend!

  10. Happy Anniversary! Hope you had a great time with your husband. That's tough, getting a great job offer, but not in the best location for your family. I have a good number of friends who have had to live apart from their spouses (happens a lot in two academia households), and it's definitely a tough thing to do.

Half-Life of Molly Pierce looks really good, I plan on reading that one soon. ~Pam

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
