Todays Topic is: Top 10 Books about tough subjects

Sharp ObjectsThe Bell JarThe Cranes Dance
The House on Mango StreetThe Descendants

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
This book is completely unrelenting. Rape, alcoholism, drug use, cutting, and murder...
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
I was blown away the first time I read this beautiful novel of a woman's descent into insanity.
The Cranes Dance  by Meg Howrey
The mental breakdown of a ballerina whose sister recently suffered a mental breakdown. This book is told by a deliciously unreliable narrator.
The House on Mango Street   by Sandra Cisneros
The stories that it tells are ones of child and spousal abuse, social rights, gender and race issues, independence, self-discovery, family, and cultural identity.
The Descendants    by Kaui Hart Hemmings
This lovely little book (and the movie based on it) follows a man whose wife is in a coma...and he's just found out she was cheating on him.

Rachel's Holiday (Walsh Family, #2)Me and Earl and the Dying GirlHow to Talk to a Widower
WingerThe Virgin Suicides

Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes
About a girl coming to grips with her addictions.
Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
This is one of the most original and funniest books about cancer (I'm aware of how that sounds) you'll ever read.
How to Talk to a Widower by Jonathan Tropper
This story follows a man in his late 20s getting over the death of his wife while dealing with his teenage stepson.
Winger by Andrew Smith
One of my favorite books of the year so far (my review went up yesterday). This book is funny and real and heartbreaking. Please look past the ugly cover, it's awesome.
The Virgin Suicides by Jeffery Eugenides
Five beautiful sisters commit suicide leaving the boys of their community baffled.

  2. What a great list! Winger is one I was interested in as soon as I read the description, and your review was the clincher. On to the reading pile it goes!

It looks like I need to check out Me, Earl and the Dying Girl and How To Talk To A Widower as well.

  6. I haven't read any of these, but I was wondering about SHARP OBJECTS, since I enjoyed Flynn's GONE GIRL. Knowing it's about all that stuff, though, hmmm ... I think I'll leave it alone. Thanks for the head's up!

  7. The Bell Jar is one of my favorite books ever, so I wish my brain hadn't been so "YA! YA! YA!" because otherwise it would've been on my list. And I just watched The Descendants and love it, so now I need to read the book!

  9. The Cranes Dance is on my wishlist, it sounds like the kind of book I love. Rachel's Holiday is a firm favourite, I love all the Walsh sisters but Rachel holds a special place in my heart. Loved Gone Girl but haven't read Sharp Objects yet, glad to hear its another winner :-)

  14. I have never read The Bell Jar. I feel like I'm committing some sort of reader sin by admitting that lol Gonna have to do that one of these days. And I saw your review of Winger the other day and unlike you the cover interested me right away (haha I'm weird) So that's definitely going on my list as well. Lots of good stuff here :) Thanks for stopping by my TTT

  15. Surprisingly, I haven't read ANY of the books on your list, maybe because they aren't YA (or don't seem like it). But The Cranes Dance and Winger sound pretty good. Cool list!

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
