Today's Topic: The 2014 Books I Meant to Read

Dude, there were SO many books that came out in 2014 that I wanted to read. It is seriously beyond hard to narrow it down to 10. Life as a first-year teacher just doesn't sync up well with life as a bookworm. Whenever I did read in the later part of the year, I always felt guilty that I wasn't reading their essays or planning my next lesson. That said, I will do my best to keep this down to 10, although a couple of extra books might sneak their way in there.

18053060 17978160 15789443 Prisoner of Night and Fog (Prisoner of Night and Fog, #1)

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book in the months before its release. After some less than favorable reviews started rolling in, though, I found my interest waning...and then I just kind of forgot about it. I do want to read this one, though, as I love Oz.
Open Road Summer by Emery Lord
I just bought this a couple of weeks ago, so it has climbed up my TBR. I might even start it next. I've heard nothing but good things.
Something Real by Heather Demetrios
So, I actually read the first, like, 200 pages of this book last spring when it first came out. I set it aside for some unknown reason (for real, I was enjoying it) and never picked it back up. I've since checked it out of the library no fewer than four times. I actually have it checked out right now. I should read it. Now.
Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman
I'm so intrigued by WWII and Nazis and Hitlers and all of that, so this sounds right up my alley. I have the arc of this; I should read it before the sequel comes out this spring.
Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson
This was another one I was DYING to get my hands on. When I finally did, I have to admit that I was totally turned off by the super long chapters. I tend to read multiple books at once, so when one book has 60 page chapters, it throws off my rhythm. That said, I DO still want to read this one. I love friendship stories.
Landline by Rainbow Rowell
I really enjoyed Attachments, the other adult novel by this author, so I was so excited by this release...and then...well, I don't know what happened exactly.
Kiss of Deception by Mary Pearson
I'll be honest, I just didn't want to start a new series. Everyone I know LOVED this one, but I just can't start a new series right now. I ALWAYS have to reread the first book (or two), so I've been biding my time for this one. (I actually just ordered this from the library--I think it's close enough now to the summer release of the the sequel that I won't have to reread.)
Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
I went and bought the hard cover of this book--something I never do--but I have yet to read it. For this I have no explanation.
My True Love Gave to Me by various authors
I also bought this one immediately upon release...
Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth
This one will definitely get read this summer. I just simply do not have the concetration needed to read a 500 page adult novel right now.
The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters
This book about suffragists and hypnosis just sounds so interesting. I NEED to make time for this one.
Salt and Storm by Kendall Kelper
A New England town plus witchcraft sounds--sounds pretty good to me.

Well that's it for me. What books did you not get to? Link me up!

  3. You've got some great choices here! I quite enjoyed reading Salt & Storm, The Cure for Dreaming, Open Road Summer, and Something Real last year. And Bitter Greens was one of my favorites ever from last year - although, yes, it is something that you'll want to focus on a bit more.
I hope you can get to some of these this year, Natalie!

  4. Wonderful list! I loved Dorothy Must Die, I'm so glad I didn't read any negative reviews before giving it a chance because I might not have read it. Since You've Been Gone is really enjoyable, though not my favorite contemporary. My True Love Gave To Me was a wonderful read! Not all the stories were perfect but all considered it was a solid 4-star-read.
Aww I can't wait to finally get my hands on The Kiss of Deception and Landline! The Cure for Dreaming made my list too! :)
I hope you'll be able to read all of these this year! :)

  5. Great list, some amazing books on here. I'm still waiting to read Landline, I was so excited for its release as I love Rainbow Rowell, but then when I had it I simply didn't get around to it.

I will strongly encourage you to read Open Road Summer and Since You've Been Gone. Both are Summer reads, so if you want to wait for summer then they will be seasonally appropriate, but they are great books. I only read Since You've Been Gone a few weeks back and I just couldn't put it down once I'd started, I was drawn in. I hope you manage to read all yur books on your list though, I know how hard it is to stay on top of books with new ones being released and being at work all day.

  9. These are great books, Natalie! A few books that are a definite must: Open Road Summer, ISLA, Since You've Been Gone, and Landline. I hope you'll get to them this year. :)

  10. I love your list. I love Open Road Summer. Isla I have been meaning to read like forever, but I haven't read Lola yet! I know I know. So far behind.
Glad you have the list though! At least maybe you can pick off books on this list so you know what next to read! :)

  11. Great picks! I have heard such great things about Since You've Been Gone though I haven't read it yet either. I haven't even read any of Morgan Matson's other novels. My True Love Gave to Me seemed like such a good book! I've never read an anthology before but for some reason that was one that I really wanted to pick up. I hope you get to all of these this year! :)

  12. I've read Since You've Been Gone and Dorothy Must Die.

To be honest, Dorothy Must Die wasn't as good as everyone was saying that it was. So many people called it crazy original but it's just Alice in Wonderland [the tim burton one]

Since You've Been Gone was GREAT THOUGH! LOVED! It was all sorts of perfect and cute.

I"m looking forward to reading Open Road Summer and the Kiss of Deception.

    Awesome picks :)

  14. Something Real, Since You've Been Gone, and Landline all made my list.
Open Road Summer, Isla and My True Love Gave To Me would have made my list, had I not already had a large amount. :)

Ugh, 60 page chapters? :( I knew it was a good idea not to read that one right away with the length. I've purchased Open Road Summer and Since You've Been Gone too. I think I'm going to have to read Kiss of Deception, I mean, since I won it in a giveaway and everything, I should probably read it anyway, but… Anyway, good list!

  15. Great list! I have a copy of Bitter Greens too, and for some reason just keep putting it down whenever I pick it up to start. I did really enjoy Landline and Isla, and I've been wanting to read Since You've Been Gone. I hope you get a chance to read some of these, and enjoy!

  16. Since You've Been Gone, Isla and the Happily Ever After as well as Landline are all ones I've been dying to read as well! But of course, I still haven't gotten to them even though I've been excited for so long. >< Hopefully soon!

  17. Kiss of Deception! I am going to petition for that one to go to the front of the line!!

Hello, there! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I read each and every one and will do my best to respond--usually on your blog instead of on mine. I will, however, always answer direct questions. Due to serious time restraints, this blog is now an award free zone, but I appreciate the thought!
